How We Keep Your Screenplay Confidential

What happens to your screenplay when you submit it, explained in plain terms.

When you submit a screenplay to The AFA Screenplay Award, it stays yours. This page explains how we handle it, who reads it, and the role of our private AI reviewer. The binding version of these protections is the submission agreement you read and sign when you enter.

This page is for information. The protections described here are made binding by the submission agreement (the NDA) you read and sign on the entry form when you submit.

What We Collect and How We Use It

When you submit a screenplay to The AFA Screenplay Award, the American Film Association ("AFA," "we," "us") collects your screenplay and the information you provide with it (such as your name, email, screenplay title, logline, genre, and page count). We use this information solely to evaluate your screenplay for the Award and to communicate with you about your submission.

Our Private AI Reviewer

To assist our human readers, AFA uses a proprietary AI reviewer. This AI reviewer runs on AFA's own private server and private infrastructure. Your submitted screenplay is never sent to any public AI model or public large-language-model service, and your screenplay is never used to train any public AI model. The AI reviewer is a tool that supports our readers, and every evaluation is overseen by a human reviewer.

Who Can Access Your Work

We keep your screenplay confidential. We do not disclose it to third parties beyond the evaluation and judging process. Access is limited to AFA's own readers, judges, and personnel who need it to evaluate your screenplay for the Award, all of whom are bound by confidentiality obligations.

Your Rights Stay With You

AFA acquires no ownership, rights, license, or option in your screenplay by reason of your submission or our evaluation of it. All rights in your work remain with you.
